Friends of the Supergrid (FOSG), Europe’s largest industrial alliance for interconnection, has adopted a new action plan. It reflects the recent developments in the energy sector, and advocates for a more interconnected electricity grid.
We believe that a “Supergrid” will enable European consumers to benefit directly and significantly from the secure supply of a sustainable energy mix across Europe.
The CEO of Friends of the Supergrid, Pierre Bernard, spoke today in Brussels, stating that “the FOSG alliance will more than ever stand-up for a pan-European grid where regions with EU-wide RES potential would be efficiently connected to areas of high demand where citizens need their power, through the effective long distance transmission of power, complementing existing national infrastructure.”
This Supergrid will contribute to the lowering of electricity prices in a significant way, a clear objective shared by the European Commission today.
FOSG also fully supports the implementation of the Energy Union, with the Supergrid being one if its core elements.
FOSG will provide in the coming weeks concrete recommendations on the infrastructure objectives to be attained by 2030. These should foster economic welfare and job creation in the EU, all the while strengthening Europe’s position as a global technology leader.
FOSG, together with its Members and in cooperation with other organizations, will make proposals to the key stakeholders in order to:
1. Foster the creation of a harmonized and collaborative European regulatory environment;
2. Facilitate a common approach to secure the supply of energy and an effective planning of generation and grid infrastructure at pan-European level;
3. Promote attractive investment conditions to secure developers and investors’ support; and
4. Harmonise, accelerate and simplify Europe’s infrastructure permitting process in order to make this process significantly more efficient
The European Supergrid is an essential instrument for the effective achievement of the five dimensions of the Energy Union. FOSG concrete measures will be a “must” for the forthcoming Energy Union Strategy.
FOSG commits itself to the support of the European Commission in order to ensure the Energy Union Strategy delivers a concrete package benefiting the European consumers.
