FOSG Roundtable: Sector Coupling and its Financing
14 May 2019 @ 12:30 - 14:30
Join Friends of Sustainable Grids (FOSG) in Brussels at 12.30pm on May 14, 2019 for a luncheon debate on: “The Future of Sector Coupling and Its Financing”.
We will be addressing four key questions, namely why sector coupling, how to do it, how much will it cost and who should be paying for it?
We are pleased to announce the following guest speakers:
• Augustijn van Haasteren, a Dutch economist working for the European Commission. He currently works for the unit within DG Energy in charge of the electricity and gas wholesale markets where he now focusses on the future role of gases and energy sector coupling.
• Prof. Ronnie Belmans, a full Professor in electric power and energy systems at the KU Leuven and a guest Professor at the Florence School of Regulation and at Imperial College in London, UK. He also held and still holds several Board positions and is a member of a number of scientific advisory boards.
• Raphaël Schoentgen, an award-winning entrepreneur and the creator of Hydrogen Advisors. He has also served on various Boards, including as Chairman for the European Fund for Hydrogen and Fuel Cells, and is the former CTO of ENGIE and former personal advisor to a G8 Minister of energy and industry.
Logistics:
• Where: Le Mess, Boulevard Louis Schmidt 1, 1040 Etterbeek, Brussels.
• When: May 14, 2019 from 12.30pm until 14.30pm.
• What: an interactive debate on the future of sector coupling and its financing, lead by industry leaders in their fields. Lunch and soft drinks will be served.
What is sector coupling?
Sector coupling is “the integration of energy supply and demand across electricity, thermal and transport applications, which occur via co-production, combined use, conversion and substitution”. It is also “whole energy systems approach” and “energy systems integration”.
In other words, sector coupling is a holistic approach to the energy transition that is inclusive of a wide variety of technologies and spreads across multiple sectors, with energy as their common denominator.
The concept of sector coupling is perfectly in line with the core objective of FOSG of connecting all sustainable grids.
How is FOSG’s event relevant?
FOSG recognizes the importance of sector coupling, having made it one of the cornerstones of our activity.
Our luncheon debate will focus on how sector coupling translates to the industry in practice (business aspects) and how to finance it. We will consider real-life challenges and ask and comment on a series of questions that need to be answered to create the appropriate framework for the development of sector coupling. Participants will hear from industry (business and finance) experts and will be encouraged to actively participate and contribute to the debate.
Our aim is to be as inclusive as the concept of sector coupling itself by letting everyone’s voice be heard during this event and the outcome of the debate will later feed into a concept note for policy-makers.
