Diversification and cross-border interconnections at the core of the EU Internal Energy Market

12 Apr 2016 @ 19:00 - 21:00

The Energy Security Package presented last February by the European Commission highlights the importance of completing the EU Internal Energy Market and putting in place the missing infrastructure links to “quickly respond to supply disruptions and re-direct energy across the EU to where it is needed”.

At present, the EU remains the largest energy importer in the world, with many EU countries heavily reliant on a single supplier. Lack of solidarity and coordination between Member States is a persisting challenge. In this context, the development and management of interconnections as part of the North-South and East-West gas corridors in the EU remains crucial to guaranteeing EU’s security of supply.

A presentation by Andrea Stegher, Head of Business Development of the Italian energy company SNAM, will offer a business perspective on how these issues could be addressed. Following this intervention, the European Commission will offer some remarks on the recently launched package and the need to further develop cross-border interconnections and strengthen EU’s energy solidarity.
